Our Farm
The Hudstead is a 13-acre working farm in Great Falls, South Carolina, run by Russ and Jen Hudson. Everything in our shop is made here in small batches, a few steps from the goats.
How we got here
We moved to the farm in 2018 with our youngest son, Scotty. The first project was a fence to keep two very busy German Shepherds at home. In 2019 we brought home a box of chicks from Tractor Supply, and one flock led to bigger coops, more birds and, eventually, a farm.
Protecting those birds from raccoons, coyotes and bobcats brought us to livestock guardian dogs. Protecting a herd of dairy goats brought us to goat milk, and goat milk brought us to soap and lotion.
Who lives here
- Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats. Our small milking herd, and the reason the shop exists. Meet the herd.
- Guardian dogs. Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherds who live with the stock and keep the predators honest.
- Ducks and laying hens. Khaki Campbells, Rouens, Runners and a silver mallard flock, plus the hens that fill the egg cooler at our farm stand.
How we make things
Our soaps are cold process bars built on one tallow and goat milk recipe, colored only with clays. Clean Slate is our one tallow-free bar. Our lotions, beard care and shampoo are mixed here by hand, with full ingredient lists on every label.
